How Should
Portable Gasoline Containers Be Filled?
Make sure to place
the container on the ground prior to filling.
Portable containers
should be filled at a safe distance—at least five feet—from any ignition
source.
Keep the dispenser
nozzle in contact with the opening of the container or the fuel tank of any
gasoline-powered equipment being filled directly at a service station. This
will prevent the build up of static electricity, which could ignite the
gasoline.
To prevent
overfilling or a spill, portable containers should be filled slowly.
Fill containers to
no more than 95% of capacity to allow for expansion of the gasoline in hot
weather.
Small engines and
gasoline-powered equipment, such as power mowers, weed eaters, and personal
watercraft should normally be allowed to cool down before being filled from
portable containers.

completely) your container, what precautions should you take in transporting
it?
