How Should Portable Gasoline Containers Be Filled?

Make sure to place the container on the ground prior to filling.
Portable containers should be filled at a safe distance—at least five feet—from any ignition source.
Keep the dispenser nozzle in contact with the opening of the container or the fuel tank of any gasoline-powered equipment being filled directly at a service station. This will prevent the build up of static electricity, which could ignite the gasoline.
To prevent overfilling or a spill, portable containers should be filled slowly.
Fill containers to no more than 95% of capacity to allow for expansion of the gasoline in hot weather.
Small engines and gasoline-powered equipment, such as power mowers, weed eaters, and personal watercraft should normally be allowed to cool down before being filled from portable containers.
