–75% of student housing

off-campus
In a recent year,
1700 fires were reported in dormitory and fraternity or sorority housing,
where only one-third of all full-time students at four-year colleges reside.
Another two-thirds live off-campus. Young people leaving home are
increasingly drawn to lively urban campuses and their surrounding downtown
neighborhoods, where space for campus expansion may be limited.
When you are
considering which college to attend, or where to live, find out about the
housing scene both on campus and in the neighborhood where you may be looking
in the future. Many students begin college life in a dormitory and move off
campus later in their college career. Three-quarters of fires reported in
student housing occur in rented houses and apartments off-campus.

questions should you ask college officials and off-campus landlords to learn
more about your current and potential exposure to fire and burn injury?
