      The sudden, dramatic change in their appearance and function can be devastating to burn patients, once it becomes apparent to them.  Severely injured patients often do not realize there has been such a significant change at first, because they are so critically ill, extensively bandaged and heavily medicated when they first reach the burn center.
      The psychological component of burn care thus is much more intense than in many other areas of health care. All members of the burn team are usually involved in helping a patient come to terms with his or her injury.
