Overview of the last year, Jeffrey Saffle MD
Discussion: Dr. Saffle welcomed attendees and reviewed accomplishments of the past year.
- Dr. Tina Palmieri, retrospective TENS review published in the JBCR
- Dr. Petra Warner, Purpura fulminans retrospective review abstract presented at 2002 ABA , manuscript in progress

Future Studies
Discussion: A number of potential studies were discussed.
- IV-IG in TENS – Nicole Gibran, Joel Fish
- A protocol has been written
- Retrospective review of burns in the frail elderly- Daniel Caruso
- This will be a retrospective chart review of the frail elderly (75 years +) and will describe comorbidities, independence (before and after injury), recovery of function
- Abdominal Compartment Syndrome – Barbara Latensor
- The initial component of this study will be to monitor abdominal pressures in all eligible patients to describe the rate of occurrence of ACS in burn patients
- Transfusion study – Tina Palmieri*
- A protocol for a randomized study is being developed
- Dr. Palmieri will first develop a survey to assess transfusion practices in burn units. The data from this survey will be used to determine criteria for the larger randomized study
- BMOV – Jenny Wakelin (GhoPharma)
- BMOV (bis(maltolato) ox ovanadium) is an organic vanadium salt which, when administered IV to pigs following burn injury, promotes wound healing
- Gho Pharma is planning to start a large multi-center study of BMOV in children with scalds and will ask for burn surgeons in the US to review their protocols as they go through the FDA process
- wakall@xs4.all.nl
Please contact the principal investigators of this project if you have questions about the above protocols. Protocols will be presented to investigators as they are finalized. Individual sites may choose to participate in all or some of the studies discussed.
Next Meeting
Discussion: The next meeting will be held during the ABA, 2003 in Miami, Florida. Participants with future study ideas should submit short study protocols to Dr. Saffle for consideration at this meeting. |
