Purpose

This is a prospective, randomized trial to compare clinical outcomes as they relate to blood transfusion strategies. Traditional transfusion practices, where hemoglobin levels are maintained at approximately 10 g/ml, will be compared a more restrictive transfusion strategy where hemoglobin levels are maintained at 7-8 g/dl.
