Anesthesiology
The number of anesthesiologists engaged in burn care nationwide is very limited and those engaged in higher levels of interest & activity (ABA membership) are fewer still. Nevertheless, the SIG has continued networking efforts to increase interest and increase our numbers. We will again present a number of relevant topics including fluid management, airway management and monitoring. Chair: Jeffrey Berman, MD.
Burn Camp
Provides a forum for problem solving and instruction in the various aspects of establishing and running camp programs for the burn injured child. Chair: Lisa Powell
Burn Center Directors. An informal meeting of physicians and others who are interested in discussing issues, such as burn unit management, physician role responsibilities and reimbursement. Chair: Louis Riina, MD.
Burn Foundation
Provides a forum where foundations (nonprofit organizations) meet to share ideas on how to set up and promote and support burn care, research, prevention and burn survivor support. Chair: Jim Floros
Burn Prevention
Devoted to the dissemination of information about activities in the burn prevention sphere. Deliberations of the Burn Prevention Committee are provided as an update on committee projects and activities. Chair: Sue Jane Smith, RN
Burn Registry Users
This is an exciting time for the ABA registry. John Kutcher and Jule Violante from Digital Innovations provided an update of changes to the software that will be occurring in the next year which include a new version of the software due to be released in November 2006. Dr. Jim Jeng from the ABA National Burn Repository Committee discussed the new NBR report. This report is going to be done annually. There will be a call for data each fall. In addition, there will be additional data points (above the minimum collected now) required. The session closed with a question/answer period concerning how centers collect code and enter data.Chair: Linda S. Edelman MPhil., BSN
Burn Survivor and Support
Creates an opportunity for burn survivors and heath care professionals to share ideas and information on providing psychosocial support to burn patients and their families. Chair: Chris Gilyard
Canadian
The agenda included the presentation of eight papers and five posters selected from submitted abstracts. The presentation of the papers was followed by a presentation by the guest speaker for the meting, Dr. David Wu, Associate Professor in the Wound Healing Research Laboratory at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. He presented some of his work in a presentation titled The Contribution of Blood-Born Cells to Wound Heal. Copies of the Cross-Canada Survey, meeting agenda and abstracts are available from the committee chairman. Abstracts are published in the Canadian Journal of Surgery (Volume 49, Number 2, April 2006). The meeting also provides an opportunity for Canadians who are attending the ABA to meet and discuss issues that are relevant to burn care in Canada. Firefighters
This informal meeting provides firefighters and others an opportunity to share information on current burn-related projects and issues. This round table format allows participants equal time, and the meeting is open to all. Chair: Ben Alder
International Burn Care
Presentation by HVO regarding volunteering overseas, a report of the completed Zambia site survey, and a report from the Managua, Nicaragua site in preparation for the teaching program in the fall of 2006. Chair: Barbara Latenser, MD
Mid-Level Providers
Gary Blaeser, a representative from Argentum Medical, LLC, gave a presentation about their Silverlon Burn Dressings. Our group had an active discussion about the effectiveness of their products for our patient population.
We discussed plans for developing a survey to administer to all mid-level providers who are members of the ABA in an effort to detail the various roles we play as members of the burn care treatment team. Our goal is to have survey results compiled for presentation at the 2007 ABA Conference. Chair: Victoria F. Owens, RN, MSN, FNP-C
Nursing
Seventy-three participants registered on the sign in sheets. Evaluations were provided but the number returned was a disappointing 17. A majority liked the round robin format of the breakouts and the networking with other nurses
The featured speaker Karla Levy PhD, RN presented “Pediatric Burn Intensive Care Nurses Practice that Facilitate Holistic Healing of Injured Children.” This presentation was based on her doctorial dissertation on her qualitative study of burn nurses and how they view the concept of “caring” as part of nursing. Issues relevant to burn nursing and the profession of nursing as a whole are discussed. Chair: Elizabeth Hayes
Nutrition
This SIG fosters interaction among interested professionals through the exchange of nutrition and metabolism information. Team members include clinical dietitians/nutritionist, nutrition support practitioners, dietetic technicians, researchers and others with an interest in nutrition support and metabolism. Physical Therapy/Occupational Therapy (PT/OT)
Our focus this year was community reintegration of the burn survivor with a focus on return to work, sexuality of the burn survivor and cultural competence of the staff working with the culturally varied burn survivor population. This SIG provides opportunities for professional exchange of ideas, with colleagues on new treatment methods, research activity and clinical problem solving. Another focus is to encourage burn therapist involvement in the ABA. Chair: Hope Hunter, PT and Co-Chair: Ted Chapman, OT
Psychosocial
Our featured speaker was Dr. Chris Dunn from the University of Washington/Harborview Medical Center. He led an exciting, interactive discussion on brief interventions for substance abuse issues on the inpatient burn unit. This SIG provides a forum for active discussion among those individuals who work with the mental, emotional and social aspects of burn injury, recovery and rehabilitation. Reconstructive
The forum for this SIG will be small case study series, to develop a listing of who is performing reconstructive procedures and to examine CPT coding for various reconstructive procedures. Chair: Joel Fish, MD
Research
This SIG promotes interaction between individuals who are involved in research related to burn injuries. Current research topics important to the area of burn injury are discussed. The group also provides information concerning current funding trends and resources. Chair: Travis L. Hedman, MPT, OCS CPT, SP, USA
Tissue Banking
This SIG focuses on the issue of allograft skin tissue for the burn patient. SIG interests include: establishing standards and procedures for the procurement, processing, storage and distribution of allograft, skin and cultured cells; advancement in technology; establishing measurable constant viability assay; clinical use of allograft; recent involvement of the FDA in tissue banking and future FDA regulation of tissue banking activities.
