Publish Ahead of Print
Beginning in September 2006 with articles slated for the November/December 2006 issue, the Journal of Burn Care and Research (JBCR) will begin posting accepted articles online before print publication. This “publish-ahead-of-print” service is becoming ubiquitous in scientific publishing and offers a number of advantages for readers and contributors. Readers and researchers will be able to find and cite the most current literature in their field and contributors will be able to cite their research in advance of print publication.

The publish-ahead-of-print process will not require any changes in procedure for JBCR contributors or reviewers. After the final, accepted version of a manuscript is received through the usual online process at https://www.editorialmanager.com/jbcr, the article will be copyedited and composed in the Journal’s style. At the same time that proofs are produced for author review, a PDF version of the article will be produced to be posted online at http://www.burncareresearch.com under the “Publish Ahead of Print” tab on the home page. The publisher will also send citation data to the National Library of Medicine at this time so that the article’s title, authors, and abstract can be found on PubMed. The rest of the process will follow the same procedures established for the print version: authors will send in their comments and corrections and the final version of the article will be published in print as scheduled. The publish-ahead-of-print version of the article will be removed from the online journal and the PubMed record, so that the final version will become the definitive record of the research.

The launch of the publish-ahead-of-print process for JBCR will provide greater flexibility in serving the informational needs of ABA members and other readers of burn care literature. ABA guidelines and other crucial communications will be updated as they become available and not be held to the limitations of bimonthly print publication. Other online services, such as the online-only posting of supplemental materials to further enhance the usefulness of JBCR are being explored.

International Outreach Program Update
In July of 2006, a burn team from the ABA visited St. Francis Hospital in Katete, Zambia, to evaluate the site for possible inclusion in the International Outreach program. Team members included: Dr. Barbara Latenser, burn center director at the University of Iowa, Joseph Chung, MD, burn fellow at the University of Iowa, Fran O’Donnell, BSN, Burn Clinical Nurse Educator at Harborview Medical Center and Kitty Vineyard from the ABA Central Office.

During their nine day stay, burn team members worked with on-site personnel to school them in the essentials of burn wound management. Teaching and training was both hands-on and in a classroom setting; burn team members assisted on OR procedures, instructed nurses in dressing changes, physiotherapy and additional follow-up care and gave lectures covering the specifics of burn injury.

St. Francis Mission Hospital is a 340 bed teaching hospital located in Eastern Zambia, near the Malawi border. It has a staff of 120 nurses, doctors and clinical officers. Efforts to establish St. Francis as a permanent burn management program are underway.

A burn team from the ABA also visited Christian Medical College in Vellore, India in April of this year. The visit was highly successful and plans for the next visit are in the works.

International Burn Care Program background
In 2005, after identifying an interest among ABA members in international volunteering, the ABA partnered with Health Volunteers Overseas, a non-profit, non-sectarian organization dedicated to improving the availability and quality of health care in developing countries through training and education. HVO designs and implements clinical education programs in child health, primary care, trauma and rehabilitation, essential surgical care, oral health, infectious disease, nursing eduction and burn management. In more than 25 resource-poor nations, HVO trains, mentors and provides critical professional support to health care providers. For more information about HVO, please visit their website at www.hvousa.org.

HVO is currently looking for burn management professionals to help evaluate sites. The assessments can be one to two weeks long depending on the site. Physicians, nurses and physical therapist with prior international experience are being recruited. For more information about this opportunity, please contact Alexis Boyd at a.boyd@hvousa.org.

Pruitt Awarded 06 Tanner-Vandeput-Boswick Burn Prize
