2026-2027 ABA Board Nominations

Board members serve in an essential capacity, representing our multidisciplinary membership and advancing the ABA’s mission to improve the lives of everyone affected by burn injury.

The ABA’s nomination process is defined in the bylaws and Board policy. In brief:

  • All members may nominate or be nominated for Board positions annually during the call for nominations.

  • Eligible candidates are invited to provide documentation supporting their nominations.

  • The Nominating Committee reviews candidates and develops a slate for Board consideration.

  • The Board reviews and approves the slate, then sends to the membership.

  • Members vote to approve or decline the slate.

How are relationships between Nominating Committee members, Board members, and candidates disclosed and mitigated?

See Board Nomination Policy

See Conflict of Interest Policy

Why does ABA elect a slate instead of individual candidates?

Members are asked to vote on incoming Board members as a group because candidates are chosen in the context of what each individual brings to the collective Board. During its deliberations, the Nominating Committee must consider how the candidates balance and diversify the Board’s attribute mix. The Nominating Committee then presents the candidates as a slate because the entire group would need to be reconsidered if any particular individual were removed (as doing so would risk losing a key attribute that is not otherwise present in the Board or in the pool of available candidates).

Open Positions

The President-elect ensures the orderly transition of Board leadership. The President-elect must be familiar with the Board’s various projects and the work of its committees in the event that he or she must take over the duties of the President unexpectedly. He or she becomes President in the event that the President resigns or the position of President otherwise becomes vacant. He or she then serves the former President’s unexpired term, as well as the full term he or she was elected to. The President-elect acts in the absence of the President as chairperson of the Board of Trustees, works closely with the President to ensure continuity of leadership, supports the efforts of the President and learns the duties of the President’s office.
