Burn Rehabilitation Following Limb Loss: General Principles and Current Advancements

The American Burn Association's Burn Program Leader Special Interest Group (SIG) invites you to join colleagues for an informative discussion focused on the basic principles and innovations regarding burn rehabilitation following limb loss. This virtual meeting features a presentation by Jennie McGillicuddy MS, OTR/L and will include an interactive discussion. Whether you're looking to expand your knowledge or connect with peers in the field, this session provides a collaborative space for learning and professional development.

About the Presenter: 

Jennie McGillicuddy MS, OTR/L is a Burn Rehabilitation Clinical Specialist at the UC San Diego Health Regional Burn Center. She also serves as the Rehabilitation Clinical Educator at UCSD Health, with the entire Department of Rehabilitation Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Language Pathology. She has lived and worked in San Diego for 19 years. With the Rehabilitation Clinical Educator role, she authors and implements therapist initial and annual competencies, manages the PT/OT/SLP Student Program, leads staff education, and coordinates trainings. Jennie has worked as a Burn Clinical Specialist for 17 years and currently also serves in a direct clinical role with the burn and limb loss populations. She began her career with the burn intensive care and intermediate care units, but her current clinical role is with the outpatient phase of burn recovery and healing. Jennie enjoys time with her family, camping, running, Pilates, and reading.

Meeting Objectives:

1. Attendees will learn about types of electrical injuries which may result in limb loss, learning about types of prosthetic options for the upper limb, including silicone, body-powered, myoelectric, and activity specific options. 

2.  Attendees will be provided with a review of rehabilitation with this population, as related to phases of wound healing, post-operative considerations, and throughout the long term phase of recovery and healing with community re-integration. This includes a review of tips and tricks as related to customization of clinical care with the burn limb loss population, with a discussion of patient-driven care. 

3. Attendees will be provided with case studies and specific plan of care examples, including examples of wording with documentation for the problems, goals, and interventions for this population.
