ABA Members Advocate for Increased Burn Research Funding in FY26
Friday, April 18, 2025
As Congress begins work on the fiscal year 2026 (FY26) budget, the American Burn Association (ABA) is encouraging lawmakers to increase funding for the Military Burn Research Program (MBRP) to $12 million—a $2 million increase over last year’s request.
This program plays a vital role in advancing treatment for both military and civilian burn survivors. Funding supports multi-center clinical trials that lead to real-world improvements in care, helping patients recover more fully from some of the most complex and traumatic injuries.
Burns have accounted for up to 10% of all combat casualties in recent military conflicts, underscoring the urgent need for continued innovation in treatment. The lessons learned from battlefield care have translated directly into life-saving advances used in civilian settings.
To support this effort, ABA members and burn centers across the country have been asked to contact their Senators and Representatives, urging them to sign bipartisan letters of support. These letters are being led by Rep. Ann Wagner (R-MO) and Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) in the House, and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) in the Senate.
ABA members, ABA-verified Burn Centers, and ABA Burn Center Organizations have been encouraged to share how military-funded research impacts their patients and their centers, especially as recent civilian emergencies, like the fireworks explosion in Honolulu, continue to demonstrate how innovations in military medicine benefit communities nationwide.
The ABA is proud to support the MBRP and to elevate the voices of clinicians and burn centers who see firsthand the impact of this critical research.
