CHICAGO (Feb. 19, 2025) – The American Burn Association (ABA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Edwin (Ed) Dellert, RN, MBA, CAE, FACEHP, as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective March 31, 2025. Dellert brings extensive leadership experience in nonprofit medical associations and healthcare organizations, with a strong track record of advancing education, advocacy, and professional development initiatives.

Dellert joins the ABA with more than three decades of experience in executive roles within healthcare and professional societies, including the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the American Society of Anesthesiologists, and the American College of Chest Physicians. His strategic vision and commitment to innovation have driven organizational growth, strengthened global engagement, and expanded high-impact educational programs. With expertise in financial stewardship, continuing medical education, and interdisciplinary collaboration, Dellert is well-positioned to lead the ABA into its next phase of growth and excellence.

“I am deeply honored to join the American Burn Association,” said Dellert. “The ABA’s unwavering commitment to collaboration and innovation serves as a beacon in burn care. I am eager to contribute to this mission and support the dedicated individuals involved in this vital work. Each conference, publication, and partnership strengthens this community and illuminates the path toward improved prevention, treatment, and recovery for all affected by burn injuries.”

“Ed’s extensive experience in nonprofit healthcare leadership and strategic development makes him an excellent fit for the ABA,” said ABA Board President Sharmila Dissanaike, MD. “His deep understanding of medical education, operational excellence, and stakeholder engagement will be instrumental in advancing our mission and strengthening our impact on burn care professionals and the patients they serve.”

Dellert brings a strong background in nonprofit healthcare leadership, medical education, and strategic planning. His expertise in operational efficiency and stakeholder collaboration aligns with the ABA’s commitment to enhancing burn care. As he steps into this role, Dellert’s leadership is expected to contribute to the organization’s ongoing initiatives and future growth.

As CEO, Dellert will oversee the ABA’s strategic initiatives, membership engagement, and educational programs, ensuring continued growth and alignment with the association’s mission. His leadership will support the ABA’s efforts in expanding high-quality education, strengthening advocacy initiatives, and enhancing resources for burn care professionals.

Dellert succeeds Kim Hoarle, MBA, CAE, who served as ABA’s Chief Executive for over seven years and significantly advanced the organization’s financial stability, membership growth, and program expansion. Following Hoarle’s departure, Paul Pomerantz, FACHE, FASAE, a renowned leader in healthcare association management, stepped in as part-time Interim CEO. Pomerantz worked closely with ABA senior staff, the Board, and leadership to ensure a smooth transition and maintain the ABA’s strong momentum.

The ABA Board of Directors convened a CEO Search Committee to select and engage an executive search firm specializing in nonprofit healthcare associations, Sterling Martin Associates, to conduct a rigorous selection process. The Search Committee, chaired by President-Elect Jeff Carter, MD, FABA, was tasked with identifying a leader who aligns with the ABA’s mission and strategic vision. After evaluating highly qualified candidates, the committee determined that Dellert’s proven leadership and dedication to advancing healthcare education and quality initiatives made him the ideal choice to guide the ABA forward.
