What Does a Child Life Specialist in Burn Care Do?

They help children understand and cope with burn treatments and hospital stays, reduce fear through play and creative activities, teach coping skills, and guide families through each step of care.

Typical Work Environments

  • Hospital burn centers (often verified by the ABA) 

  • Pediatric and adult burn units 

  • Outpatient burn clinics and follow-up centers 

  • Rehabilitation facilities for pediatric burn survivors 

  • Burn survivor camps and community reintegration programs

Key Responsibilities

  • Use play, art, and storytelling to help children process medical experiences 

  • Educate patients and families about procedures and recovery 

  • Support coping strategies during dressing changes and surgeries 

  • Advocate for each child’s emotional and developmental needs 

  • Collaborate with nurses, physicians, therapists, and social workers 

  • Facilitate peer support and group activities for young survivors

Education and Training Path

  • Bachelor’s degree in child life, child development, psychology, or related field 

  • 600-hour supervised child life internship 

  • Certification as a Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS) through the ACLP (Association of Child Life Professionals)

  • Continuing education to maintain certification and grow expertise
