What Does a Burn and Trauma Registrar / Coder Do?

  • Collect and enter detailed data on burn, adult, and pediatric trauma patients into national and hospital registries. 

  • Use ICD-10 coding and Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) scoring to classify diagnoses and injuries. 

  • Produce data reports for trauma teams and burn center leadership to support quality improvement and accreditation. 

  • Help track patient outcomes to inform research, education, and community injury prevention. 

Typical Work Environments

  • Burn centers within academic medical centers 

  • Trauma hospitals (adult & pediatric) 

  • Hospital performance improvement or quality departments 

  • Remote / hybrid coding and data roles

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and abstract data from electronic medical records 

  • Apply accurate coding and injury severity scoring 

  • Generate reports for internal teams and national databases 

  • Support trauma performance improvement processes 

  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and researchers

  • Maintain compliance with national registry standards

Education and Training Path

  • Completion of a two- or four-year Health Information Management (HIM) or Nursing program; or equivalent coding/abstraction experience 

  • ICD-10 coding course certificate (within 5 years) 

  • Trauma Registrar Course and AAAM Injury Severity Scoring Course (within 6 months of hire) 

  • Certifications like RHIT, RHIA, or Registered Nurse (preferred) 

  • Continuing education to stay current on coding, registry standards, and burn care trends
