About the Fellowship:
Primary goal is to provide the fellow with an in-depth experience in the management of the entire spectrum of burn and complex wound care in the setting of a large university teaching hospital. The Burn Service performs approximately 375 operations on pediatric and adult patients each year at University of Iowa Health Care. The staff assists on all operations. Each fellow can expect to perform over 200 major procedures during their fellowship. Although the preponderance of surgical cases involves acute burn surgery, complex wound care and burn reconstruction procedures are also part of the surgical cases. Procedures such as escharotomies, bronchoscopies, and conscious sedation are all performed in the Burn Treatment Center on a regular basis.

How to Apply

Applications for Burn Surgery Fellowship can be submitted starting April 1, 2026 for the academic year July 1, 2027 -June 30, 2028. Ideal candidates for our program must have completed or be completing 3 years in an ACGME approved General Surgery (preferred) or Plastic Surgery residency and be eligible for certification by the American Board of Surgery (preferred). Applicants interested in stepping out of their General Surgery or Plastic Surgery residency for fellowship are reviewed on an individual basis. J-1 and H1b visas are encouraged to apply. If interested in applying for Burn-Focused Surgical Critical Care Fellowship: All interested applicants must match the eligibility requirements based on the ACGME Guidelines which include: Prior to appointment in the program, fellows must have completed at least three clinical years in an ACGME-accredited or AOA-accredited graduate medical education program in one of the following specialties: anesthesiology, emergency medicine, neurological surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopaedic surgery, otolaryngology, plastic surgery, surgery, thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, or urology. Applicants must be either eligible for the American Board of Surgery Certification or certified with the American Board of Surgery. If stepping out of a residency with 3 completed years, applicant must provide documentation to be returning to a residency for completion after fellowship.
