Funded by a $35,000 contribution from BCEN®, the program provides seven $5,000 scholarships to support ABA members pursuing higher education in nursing and healthcare-related fields. The scholarship reflects a shared commitment to reducing financial barriers to education and strengthening the pipeline of professionals advancing burn and emergency care.

“This scholarship represents an important investment in the future of nursing and the care of patients across the burn and emergency spectrum,” said American Burn Association President, Leopoldo Cancio, MD, FABA. “Supporting education and professional advancement helps ensure a strong, prepared workforce capable of meeting the needs of patients and families.”

The program is open to BCEN-certified nurses pursuing higher education, as well as firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics pursuing a nursing degree. Funds may be used for tuition, required fees, and course materials.

“This partnership reflects our shared commitment to advancing nursing education and expanding access to opportunity,” said Janie Schumaker, MBA, BSN, RN, CEN, CPHQ, CENP, ICE-CCP, FABC, CEO, Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing. “By supporting learners at critical points in their careers, this scholarship helps strengthen the future of emergency nursing and the broader healthcare workforce.”

Applications are open from May 6, 2026, to June 15, 2026. Recipients will be selected through a competitive review process conducted by the ABA Nursing Committee, with awards announced in late July.

Beyond financial support, the program is designed to strengthen the burn and emergency care workforce by supporting degree completion, career progression, and transition into nursing practice.

The scholarship launch coincides with National Nurses Week (May 6–12), a time dedicated to recognizing the more than 5 million nurses across the United States whose expertise, compassion, and dedication are central to patient care and community health.

Interested applicants and eligible members are encouraged to apply and share the opportunity within their professional networks.
