What Does a Burn Care Beside Professional Do?

They assist with daily patient care, support nurses and therapists, help with wound dressing changes, monitor vital signs, and provide patients and families with the steady, compassionate presence needed during long hospital stays.

Typical Work Environments

  • Hospital burn centers (often verified by the ABA) 

  • Trauma centers with burn services 

  • Outpatient burn clinics and follow-up care centers 

  • Rehabilitation facilities for burn survivors

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and assist during dressing changes and wound care 

  • Monitor and record vital signs and patient comfort 

  • Support patient mobility and rehabilitation activities 

  • Help maintain infection control standards and clean patient areas 

  • Provide emotional reassurance and clear communication to patients and families 

  • Collaborate closely with nurses, therapists, and physicians for coordinated care

Education and Training Path

  • High school diploma or GED (minimum requirement) 

  • Postsecondary certificate programs in patient care, EMT, or medical assisting (often preferred) 

  • On-the-job training in burn unit protocols and wound care techniques 

  • Certifications like Basic Life Support (BLS); some roles may prefer EMT or CNA certification 

  • Continued education and training through burn center courses or ABA resources.
