What Does a Burn Care Registered Nurse Do?

Burn care nurses treat and monitor patients with complex burn injuries, manage wound care, pain control, and rehabilitation, and provide education and emotional support to patients and families throughout recovery. Their role combines clinical precision with compassionate care.

Typical Work Environments

  • Burn Care Units (BCUs) (often ABA-verified)

  • Intensive Care Units (ICUs) 

  • Emergency Departments and Trauma Centers 

  • Outpatient burn clinics and rehabilitation centers

Key Responsibilities

  • Stabilize and assess patients with acute burn injuries 

  • Clean, dress, and monitor burn wounds 

  • Administer medications and manage pain 

  • Support emotional well-being and coordinate mental health referrals

  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) 

  • Ongoing Continuing Education in wound care and trauma nursing
